With only a weekly tutorial to supervise my dissertation I had to be extremely self-motivated. I set my own deadlines and targets, and became confident in taking direction from my tutors while developing their advice, though my own initiative, into new areas of study that would be useful in my work.
I gained excellent experience in the research, organization and presentation of a complex subject and attained first class marks. I was also called upon during the course to give seminar presentations as part of a team.
This required the careful structuring and organization of ideas into a PowerPoint presentation. My forward planning was vital for progressive and well paced delivery and this enabled me to develop excellent communication skills as well as developing a good working relationship within a team. Weekend Sales Assistant, where my responsibilities included customer service, stock control, cash handling and opening store accounts.
This work involved me in advising and assisting customers, coping with problems and unexpected situations and taking responsibility for cashing the tills at the end of the day. Summer Aviva Insurance, Folkestone, Kent Interacted with managers and liaised with team members. Typical duties included composition of letters, organising presentations and liaising with clients.
I learnt how to create, manage and update computer databases and files more efficiently. I also increased my problem solving skills and time management when under pressure. Volunteer Work: I worked for the Folkestone Gazette where my role included telephoning members of the public to chase up stories, writing up articles and interviewing people. Other jobs have also included: working in a pub, sometimes under pressure in a busy team and dealing tactfully with occasionally difficult customers and assisting teachers at a primary school.
Fonts are largely down to personal preference, but choose something clear and easy to read. My own preference is for the "Sans" fonts. Major sections and their subsections are strongly deviated to grab the attention of the hiring manager.
A defining feature of the design is a relatively large block of two-column text at the start of the template to include a summary of interests, achievements, history, etc. This acts as a useful place to communicate information with the potential employer that may otherwise be overlooked by simply reading a list of achievements and job titles. The content is arranged primarily by employer with the ability to list multiple positions within the same company.
The template features a sidebar for important information such as contact details, languages, skills, titles, etc. The rest of the content is housed in clear colored sections with each entry featuring a space for a date, title, description and location. The publication list in this template is particularly useful for those that wish to list an extensive list of publications within separate categories.
The layout is concise and best suited to few entries per section. The template could also be adapted for an individual with more work experience but be careful not to fill it out to much longer than two pages. The margin is moved to the left of the document and now holds employer names, degrees or descriptions which makes for quick reference by potential employers.
Major headings are clearly separated as blocks within which each entry is styled with the date, title and description. The template is quite compact and manages to squeeze references and grades for courses into small blocks of text.
The CV is clearly structured with large section titles and important dates on a sidebar. Contact information is clearly displayed in a gray block. This class features four document themes which completely change the layout of the document, to get a preview of each of these themes see the PDF previews below.
